“Cultural Evolution, China 2005-2010” is a book by French photojournalist Lionel Derimais, documenting the five years he spent living in China.
The 88 color photographs are accompanied by an essay by American journalist Mary Kay Magistad, who covered China and Southeast Asia for nearly 20 years for outlets such as BBC World Service and NPR. She currently serves as the Deputy Director of the Center on U.S.-China Relations at the Asia Society.
The book also includes biographies of the contributors, as well as an interview with the author.
The years leading up to the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics and the period immediately following—often referred to as the "Olympic years"—marked a time of massive structural, societal, and cultural change for both Beijing and China as a whole. As Mary Kay Magistad notes in her essay, these were "the years in which China changed the world, and the world changed China."
